A medical consultation is a consultation which
takes place between an employee and a licensed physician for the purpose of determining what
medical examinations or procedures, if any, are appropriate in cases where a significant
exposure to a hazardous chemical may have taken place.
Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic technique of
visualizing the inside of the airways for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. An instrument
(bronchoscope) is inserted into the airways, usually through the nose or mouth, or occasionally
through a tracheostomy. This allows the practitioner to examine the patient's airways for
abnormalities such as foreign bodies, bleeding, tumors, or inflammation.
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) is an evaluation
of the respiratory system including patient history, physical examinations, chest x-ray
examinations, arterial blood gas analysis, and tests of pulmonary function. Pulmonary function
testing has diagnostic and therapeutic roles and helps clinicians answer some general questions
about patients with lung disease.
Sleep studies are tests that record the body
activity during sleep. They are helpful in identification of sleep disorders.
An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a record of
the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. It is done by electrodes attached to
the outer surface of the skin and recorded by a device outside the body. It is used to monitor
your heart. Doctors can use an electrocardiogram to look for patterns among these heartbeats and
rhythms to diagnose various heart conditions.
Chest ultrasound is the use of medical
ultrasonography to perform imaging of the chest. It can be considered either a diagnostic or a
screening procedure. It may be useful in younger women, where the denser fibrous tissue may make
mammograms more difficult to interpret.
Pleural procedure or plueral tapping, also know as
Thoracentesis, is an invasive procedure to remove fluid or air from the pleural space for
diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. A cannula, or hollow needle, is carefully introduced into
the thorax, generally after administration of local anesthesia.
